Artprojx Cinema presents

Nina Danino
COMMUNION
35mm, 10 mins (2010)

a film installation at:

Heath Street Baptist Church,
84 Heath Street, Hampstead,
London NW3 1DN

12-23 October 2013

Screening time 12 noon – 6pm (except Sundays 1- 6pm)

Communion by Nina Danino is a portrait of a young girl filmed by cinemtographer Billy Williams BSC, creating a silent, translucent image, which draws on the paradox between beauty as iconic, secular glamour and as religious interiority.

Nina Danino is an artist and filmmaker based in London. She has been making films since l980, which have been broadcast and screened at cinemas, festivals and museums worldwide. She lectures in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. http://ninadanino.com/

Billy Williams BSC is the Oscar winning cinematographer of Women in Love, Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Exorcist, Gandhi. In his career he has lit and photographed such Hollywood stars as Janet Leigh, Ava Gardner, Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor

Heath Street Baptist Church is a large Neo Gothic, non-conformist chapel built in l862. The interior is decorated with Art Nouveau stained glass windows. The Victorian Gothic interior echoes the intricate Pugin details of the Chapel setting in the film itself. http://www.heathstreet.org/

Also showing at:

The Queen’s Cinema, Gibraltar.
12-14 November 2013
Screening Time: 12 noon – 6pm

The Queen’s Cinema opened in l957 and is one of the few remaining grand cinemas in Europe. It closed for cinema screenings in 2006, but is architecturally intact, including its luxurious furnishings and 35mm projection. The vast space of the 50’s Cinema is transformed into a first time venue for the film installation together with an especially commissioned poster for the cinema façade.

The sacred space of the Church and the secular space of the Cinema fit in very well with the dual aspect of the film which combines the star photography of Hollywood cinema with the religious iconography of portraiture associated with Communion photography.

Limited edition catalogue with a text by Sarah Cooper.
Dr. Sarah Cooper writes on Film Theory and Aesthetics and is Head of Department, Film Studies, King's College, University of London, she is the author of The Soul of Film Theory.
